Martin wrote that, “5 years ago I woke up with the chorus of this song. I then went to see my friend Chris Tomlin and we finished it together.” For the first version of this song “HYMN FOR OUR NATION (God Bless America)”, Martin confessed, “I’m not sure why an Englishman is singing about America...😀 but it’s an important time for us all to pray. To join together across all our nations and pray for God’s mercy and grace”. This song, altered so it may be sung over many different countries, is described by Martin to be, “a simple prayer. A simple song of worship.”
