"Theologians almost unanimously agree that the book of Psalms is divided into three categories:
Psalms of praise - which are the songs that say “everything is awesome! Everything is cool when God’s part of the team! Yay God!”
Psalms of Thanksgiving - everything's not awesome; in fact, they're pretty terrible until God came through like a boss, and now, “everything is awesome!”
Psalms of lament - these are Psalms of discomfort, of questioning, of unresolution, which shouldn't really surprise us, should it? Because in the book of Romans, we're told that the people of God have been grafted into Israel, which, do you know what Israel means? See, names are very important in the Hebrew Scriptures. The word Israel means “one who wrestles with God”, so in a sense, to become a Christian is to be invited into the eternal, divine
wrestling match, doesn't that sound fun?
As we took a survey of the industry in which our band makes music, we found a lot of Psalms of praise, a lot of songs of Thanksgiving, but the category of lament was tragically missing. I mean, we might be able to find a verse here and there, but then it would quickly move into Thanksgiving, and we'd love to point the finger here, but we really have no one to blame but ourselves. See, our band, we've dabbled in Psalms of lament, but we've pretty much avoided them until now.
Our new EP The Things We've Been Afraid To Say, is a collection of Psalms of lament. It's a collection of songs saying we don't have it figured out, and we're not exactly sure where to go sometimes.
The topics range from being attracted someone who's not your spouse, casual sex and pornography, political outrage and hatred, secrets fear, and sexual abuse.
By no means is this a comprehensive list. It wasn't meant to be. These are just Psalms that have naturally come out of our writing sessions over the last few years, and we finally found courage to put them all into one place. Give it a listen:
