Love is in the Things you Make from 1974 album Paid on the Nail by singer/songwriter Graham Kendrick.
A reflective song celebrating the presence of God's love in creation. Through vivid imagery of rainbows, snow-capped mountains, and seagulls soaring in the sky, the song expresses a deep belief that love is evident in everything God creates. It portrays God’s love as always near and attentive, even powerful and awe-inspiring like a flash of lightning.
The song is also a personal prayer, asking God to shape the believer’s heart to reflect His love - to give selflessly and live as His child. Ultimately, the song beautifully captures the idea that love is woven into all of creation and asks to be made into a vessel of that divine love.
Originally released on the Key Records label, ‘Paid on the Nail’ was Graham’s third album and a landmark in his ministry.
It continued the acoustic/folky style which had been Graham’s hallmark in his earlier recordings but also introduced a wider variety and subtlety of arrangements and other instruments including Peter Roe on the Moog synthesiser. The songs were written while Graham was part of a team ministry called ‘In the name of Jesus’ who engaged in evangelism and church renewal around the UK.

Morning paints a rainbow ‘cross the sky
Soft rain in the pavement pools still shining
Taking time to watch the weather break
Love is in the things you make (oh)
Love is in the things you make
I have seen the snow on mountains high
I have seen the seasons rolling by me
So, I believe that love is in your hands
For love is in the things you make
Love is in the things you make
Love is in the way you’re always near me
Love is in the way you always hear me
When I see the flash of lightning
Then I see your love is frightening
Love is in the things you make (oh)
Love is in the things you make
So make me yours now make me good
Love like all God’s children should
Help me now to give and not to take (oh)
For love is in the things you make
I have seen the seagull sailors high
Dance the dappled days across the sky
And I believe that love is in your hands
For love is in the things you make
Love is in the things you make
Love is in the way you’re always near me
Love is in the way you always hear me
When I see the flash of lightning
Then I see your love is frightening
Love is in the things you make (oh)
Love is in the things you make
So make me yours now make me good
Love like all God’s children should
Help me now to give and not take (oh)
For love is in the things you
Love is in the things you
Love is in the things you make
