You're The Perfume, I'm The Jar from 1974 album Paid on the Nail by singer/songwriter Graham Kendrick.
Explores the deep connection between the believer and Christ through vivid metaphors. The song portrays Jesus as the source of security, guidance, and transformation - He is the Shepherd to the stray, the tree to the branch, and the rain to the desert.
Each metaphor highlights dependence on Christ and the fulfilment found in His presence. It reflects on the sweetness of life when connected to Jesus, emphasising that He is everything needed and everything valuable, bringing purpose and light to the believer’s journey.
Originally released on the Key Records label, ‘Paid on the Nail’ was Graham’s third album and a landmark in his ministry.
It continued the acoustic/folky style which had been Graham’s hallmark in his earlier recordings but also introduced a wider variety and subtlety of arrangements and other instruments including Peter Roe on the Moog synthesiser. The songs were written while Graham was part of a team ministry called ‘In the name of Jesus’ who engaged in evangelism and church renewal around the UK.

You’re the castle, I’m the keep
In your walls I safely sleep
I’m the branch and You’re the tree
I’m part of You, You’re part of me
You’re the Shepherd I’m the stray
Losing You I lose my way
Finding You I’ll find my place
in the shining of your face
So my life it will be sweet
And everywhere is where we meet
You’re the diamond, I’m the mine
And through the dark I see you shine
I’m the desert, You’re the rain
You’re the ransom, I’m the slave
I’m the branch and You’re the vine
I’m the cup and You’re the wine
When the cup is full and the wine is new
Then the world will drink of You
You’re everything I have
And everything I need I find in You.
So my life it will be sweet
And everywhere is where we meet
You’re the diamond, I’m the mine
And through the dark I see you shine
I’m the desert, You’re the rain
You’re the ransom, I’m the slave
You’re the potter, I’m the clay
You’re the perfume, I’m the jar
When the jar is broken on the ground
There’ll be fragrance all around.
